2 caretakers charged after quadriplegic man found dead inside home

Two caretakers have been charged with murder after a quadriplegic man was found dead inside a Chesterfield home last summer.

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) – Two caretakers have been charged with murder after a quadriplegic man was found dead inside a Chesterfield home last summer.

Police say on July 25, 2023, officers were called to a report of a man in cardiac arrest at a home on Rainwater Road.

“The man, identified as Matthew R. Runion, 36, was declared dead shortly after rescue personnel arrived on scene,” Chesterfield Police said.

Police say Runion lived inside the home with two caretakers, identified as Louis R. Smith, 54, and Jennifer S. Stewart, 36.

The investigation indicates that Runion died as a result of long-term neglect.

Last week, Smith and Stewart were indicted on the following charges:

  • Felony murder
  • Felony abuse
  • Neglect of vulnerable adult

The two were arrested on May 23 and are being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond.
